Sedgefield Community College, a member of the Laidlaw Schools Trust, has been shortlisted for two awards at this year's Tes Schools Awards.

The most outstanding individuals and institutions that the education sector has to offer have been recognised in the shortlist for the Tes Schools Awards 2022. It's been revealed that Sedgefield Community College has been shortlisted for the SEND Provision in a Mainstream Setting of the Year and Community Engagement Initiative of the Year awards.

Community Engagement Initiative of the Year

During the 2021 pandemic, Sedgefield Community College raised over £10,000 for Walk for Autism, with more than 50 members of our staff, students, parents and carers taking on the challenge to walk at least 10,000 steps a day for eight consecutive days.

In addition to the Walk for Autism challenge, we have participated in several other community engagements, such as the Durham Foodbank appeal, the Sedgefield Dementia Cafe and the work of The Royal British Legion.

SEND Provision in a Mainstream Setting of the Year

Raising awareness about learning needs is at the heart of our SEND team. Our staff strive every day to make a difference to our learners, their families, and the wider community.

Sedgefield Community College not only supports neurodivergent pupils but also increases our neurotypical pupils' understanding of their peers' needs, facilitating a culture of acceptance, inclusion, and empathy.

Our efforts have been recognised both regionally and nationally via charity work and Paddy McGuinness' BBC documentary, Our Family and Autism, in which McGuinness visited the school to commend our outstanding SEND provision.

The Tes Schools Awards Winners will be announced on Friday 17th June at a gala ceremony at London’s Grosvenor Park Hotel.
