In summer 20 and summer 21, our Y11 students did not sit formal exams at the end of Y11 as a consequence of the COVID pandemic. The grades allocated to students were determined using different methodologies that are summarised in the paragraphs below. Our students did have to cope with many challenges, including extended periods where they accessed their learning remotely. The progress that the students made despite these obstacles was exceptional and we are exceptionally proud of all of their efforts.
2020 (*) – Due to the global pandemic and subsequent national lockdown, all students received Centre Assessed Grades (CAGs) for their final examination grades. The CAGs were based on evidence drawn from many robust Tier of Entry exams (TOEs) that took place over years 10 and 11. All of these exams are conducted under actual exam conditions. The completed papers always undergo a rigorous quality assurance and standardisation process to ensure reliability of the grades awarded.
2021 (*) – Due to the global pandemic and second national lockdown, the Department of Education announced that final GCSE grades would be awarded by teacher assessed grades (TAGs) which were to be determined through teacher assessment. Teachers were required to make a holistic judgement of each student’s performance on a range of evidence relating to the subject content that had been delivered by their teacher (either in the classroom or via remote learning). Sedgefield Community College carried out this process as directed from policy to process and built-in extensive quality assurance and standardisation measures to ensure consistency and fairness in the grades awarded.
2022 (*) - As students returned to formal examinations in summer 2022, the decision was taken nationally to gradually return to the 2019 grading approach. This means that across the country, students were always expected to perform 'better' in 2022 than was the case in 2019 - making it difficult to compare data from 2022 with previous years. It is anticipated that in summer 2023, the grading approach will return to the 2019 model.
Congratulations to the Class of 2024
After all of their hard work and commitment, we’re delighted that our Y11 students have performed brilliantly in their qualifications this summer. These superb results will support our young people as they go onto the next stages of their learning. We wish them the very best and know that they will go on to achieve great things! There are countless stories of individual successes, with some students overcoming significant challenges in order to excel and many being awarded very high grades across multiple subjects.
In order to perform so well, the support of all of the parents and carers during the time that their children have spent at SCC has been vital. Thank you to all of our families for their partnership with the school over five years. Of course, the role of the teaching and other staff can not be under-estimated and everyone at the school is so pleased that our students have achieved the brilliant grades they deserve.
Well done to all of the students in our class of 23/24!
